Cranial Osteopathy

The small amounts of movement that exist in the infant skull permit the baby’s head to adapt to the forces of labour. However when birth is complicated by being unduly slow or fast, or when other complications occur such as the need for forceps delivery the infant head may not fully recover from the distortion. This may result in subtle changes and can possibly lead to issues such as feeding difficulties, colic and disturbed sleep patterns.

Cranial osteopathy is a very subtle technique that can be extremely effective in settling the symptoms of colic and feeding difficulties

‘Ben treated both my children when they were babies for colic and I was amazed at the difference it made in them’ Dee, Essex.

Some babies find treatment very relaxing and either fall asleep while having treatment or sleep very quickly after treatment. During treatment we also discuss techniques and ideas that the parents can implement take can greatly help the infant, including exercises and massage techniques. To find out more please do not hesitate contacting us.

Many midwives and health visitors are now recommending new mothers to bring their babies for an osteopathic check up:

Symptoms that can possibly be helped with cranial osteopathy include:

  • Discomfort whilst lying on their back
  • Excess mucous production
  • Plagiocephaly, flat head or odd shaped head
  • Suckling/feeding difficulties

‘My son had flat head syndrome (brachycephaly) and I felt that cranial osteopathy and the advice and help Ben gave was invaluable in helping my son’ Sharon, Wickford

Secondary effects of unresolved issues in some children can include:

  • Colic or excessive crying
  • Regurgitation
  • Sinus problems
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Suckling/feeding difficulties
  • Unsettled restless babies

As children grow older, problems may become apparent which may have arisen because of earlier strains or as a result of trauma such as knocks on the head or falls. Recurrent infection in the nose and ears (glue ear) may be due in part to restrictions in the small yet important movements between the various bones of the growing skull.

Children can also place many strains and stresses on their bodies due to all of the different stresses placed upon them, even from a young age, from academic to sporting and from life in general. An example is, since the advent of the computer game, children sit in one position for several hours whilst leaning forward literally inside the game, placing enormous postural stresses through the child’s body, and if not properly addressed, as with the above examples, can potentially lead to long-term problems.

Treatments available Monday-Saturday and evening appointments at the Stanford-Le-Hope Clinic Essex

‘My son has learning difficulties which can cause him to have issues with his concentration and temper, I find that having cranial osteopathy helps him calm down so much and help with his concentration. Ben has a very calming approach and temperament which also really helps my son calm down when having treatment’ Claire, Essex
